Among network of field stations under Integrated Disease Vector Control Project, Guwahati Field Unit (FU) was initially established in Sonapur, the Dimoria block of Kamrup district of Assam in 1986 for control of persistent transmission of malaria contributing most cases and deaths annually in the State. The main objectives were to field test newer interventions for containment of malaria transmission and subsequent transfer of technology to strengthen the national malaria control programme. It was in 2008 that this station was shifted to Guwahati city due to logistics requirements. Ever since inception of the station, number of technologies were evaluated such as (i) insecticide-treated mosquito nets/ long-lasting insecticidal nets for vector control (ii) monitoring therapeutic efficacy of antimalarial medicines for treatment of Plasmodium falciparum malaria (iii) evaluation of rapid test kits for diagnosis of malaria (iv) promoting environment management methods for control of mosquito breeding (v) capacity building exercises for strengthening state healthcare services. Taken together all these newer interventions were incorporated in healthcare services resulting in substantial disease transmission reduction and communities at stake today are more aware of the disease prevention and control. The future priorities include building cross-border initiative preventing entry and dissemination of multi-drug resistant malaria and monitoring insecticide resistance in disease mosquito vector species in northeast region of India.
