Insectary

The Institute has a specially designed well-maintained mosquito rearing Insectary facility for supporting mosquito-based experimentations, evaluation of insecticides and other basic research on anopheline mosquitoes. The facility has two well-characterized vector species, namely An.stephensi and An.culicifacies which are susceptible to insecticides used in public health. The insectary facility houses both adults and larval stages of these anopheline mosquitoes which can be used for different bioassays, adulticide tests, repellent tests, susceptibility assessment towards insecticides, etc. This Institutional facility act as a source of reference mosquito species for different biological studies and insecticide-resistance studies. Each Field Unit of NIMR also maintain small insectaries where they maintain the local fauna of principal malaria vector of the region.
